Do I need to fast before a blood test?

A glass of plain water on a kitchen counter in morning light before a blood test

Only fast if the clinician or collection team tells you to. For EVA blood tests, fast for 10 hours beforehand; plain water is fine. Some tests require it and others do not. The instructions for your booked panel take priority over a generic preparation checklist.

Knowing the answer in advance makes the appointment easier. Ask for written instructions when you book, especially if the panel includes several different tests.

What does fasting mean for a blood test?

When fasting is required, the usual instruction is to avoid food and drinks other than plain water for the specified period. The duration depends on the test. Do not assume that an evening meal and a morning appointment automatically give you the correct fasting period.

Your preparation checklist

  1. Confirm the tests. Keep the panel name or booking confirmation so the team can give the right instructions.
  2. Confirm the timing. Ask when to stop eating, what you can drink and when your appointment will take place.
  3. Ask about medicines and supplements. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Ask the clinician how to handle your usual schedule.
  4. Plan the location. For home or office collection, confirm the address, access instructions and private space.
  5. Keep the contact details. If your preparation changes, tell the team before collection.
  6. Protect your baseline. In the 24 hours before, avoid strenuous exercise and get a good night's sleep. Take your usual prescribed medicines as directed. Pause biotin supplements for 48 hours before collection, unless prescribed by your doctor; in that case, check with your doctor before pausing.
  7. Reschedule if you are unwell. A fever, flu or other acute infection temporarily changes several markers, so the results would not reflect your usual health.

Can I drink coffee?

If you have been instructed to fast, check before drinking anything other than plain water. No coffee before an EVA blood test, even black. Plain water only.

What if I accidentally eat?

Tell the collection team what you had and when. They can advise whether to proceed or rearrange the relevant tests. For EVA, fasting markers such as insulin and glucose are usually rebooked rather than interpreted after food. Keeping that information from the team makes interpretation harder.

What if fasting is difficult for me?

Raise that before the appointment. Ask for individual instructions rather than adapting a generic checklist yourself. The aim is a properly prepared test that fits your circumstances.

What should I bring to the review?

Keep a note of any preparation issue and the medicines or supplements you discussed. That short record can help explain what happened on the collection day.
